ASHA Connect is a digital health technology platform developed for ASHA Nepal, a non-profit organization founded in 2015 with the aim of providing affordable and sustainable healthcare access to people, living in rural Nepal. The platform utilizes technology to address the shortage of doctors and provide appropriate medical care to the local population. The platform also focuses on improving people’s health literacy so that they can protect themselves from serious diseases and injury, even with limited access to medical care.
The main goal of ASHA Connect is to create a community-based, self-run medical care delivery model in Nepal that utilizes digital technology. The platform aims to collect data about patients, make an analysis, and provide appropriate medical care to the locals. Additionally, the platform aims to improve people’s health literacy and provide them with the necessary tools and information to protect themselves from serious diseases and injury.
As the lead UX/UI Designer, I played a key role in the development of ASHA Connect. My responsibilities included defining the architecture of the platform, designing the user interface, and ensuring that the platform was user-friendly and accessible to all. I collaborated closely with the community health workers, medical practitioners and developers to ensure that the platform met the needs of both the users (primarily community health workers) and the organization. My responsibilities included conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, iterating on designs, determining information architecture, and responsive design.
The design process for ASHA Connect faced the challenge of low digital literacy among the community health workers, as the program is being implemented in remote parts of Nepal with limited access to internet and mobile technology. To overcome this, the UX design of the application had to be straightforward and intuitive.
My role as the lead UI/UX designer involved conducting thorough research to comprehend the requirements and capabilities of the target audience and the goals of the organization. Based on this research, I created a user-friendly interface for the V1 of ASHA Connect, with easy navigation and functionality. Additionally, I collaborated with the development team to ensure that the platform was scalable and could adapt to the evolving needs of the users.
Wireframe Design
After ideating and drafting some paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the app. These designs focused on delivering personalized guidance to community health workers.
Low Fidelity Prototype
Usability Finding
After conducting a moderated usability study in Dang with 12 community health workers, I was able to gather useful insights regarding technical term, recommendation screen and language barrier. In order to comprehend for such factors, there were some changes made for the high fidelity prototype.

Accessibility Consideration
For accessibility, clear labels for interactive elements that can be read by screen readers were considered and initial focus of the create new visit on home page help define the primary task or action for the user.
This community driven project with a mix of technology has won the Grand Prize Vision Hacker Awards 2021, making a significant impact in the community by providing access to healthcare using technology. Through user interviews and research, community members that were feeling left out from accessing healthcare were identified. We worked to develop a community-driven approach to healthcare using technology, which resulted in the development of the award-winning app. This app has helped to bridge the gap in access to healthcare for underserved communities and has provided a more convenient and accessible way for users to receive the care they need. The success of the app is a testament to the power of technology to make a positive impact in people's lives and is an achievement that I am proud to have been a part of.
